Micromanagers are adept at developing alternative forms of monitoring or gathering information. It is not uncommon for supervisors or lower-level managers to discover that the people they manage are informally reporting to micromanagers several rungs up on the organizational ladder that have left the position but continue to monitor “how things are going” in their past area of influence.

Many micromanagers will defend this by calling it an open-door policy. In reality, it is not the front door that is open; it is the back door or a secret entrance to the basement.
